New Tax Law Means Money for Many Taxpayers
Under the new Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department will begin sending out advance payment checks this summer. Recently passed by Congress and signed by President Bush, the law states that many American taxpayers will receive a check throughout the months of July, August, and September.

For those who qualify for the advance payment, the IRS will send a letter in July, which will explain how much you will receive and when you can expect the check to be mailed. If you do not qualify, you will receive a letter stating why you are not eligible for the advance payment check.

Taxpayers who paid Federal income taxes for 2000 and were not claimed as dependent on another person's 2000 tax return may be eligible for the advance payment. Single taxpayers could receive up to $300, heads of households could receive a maximum of $500, and married couples could receive up to $600.

The advance payment checks will be mailed according to the last two digits of your Social Security number.

Staples 5th Annual Teacher Appreciation Day
Surfing HyperUSA, the Internet brand of HyperUSA, will participate in the Cleburne Staples Teacher Appreciation Day. The 5th Annual Teacher Appreciation Day is scheduled for July 31st, and the Cleburne Staples will offer special promotions and coupons to local teachers and administration.

"The Teacher Appreciation Day is intended as an acknowledgement and benefit to the teachers by providing them with unique sales and pricing to save money and acknowledge their efforts in the community," said James Cassidy, Staples General Manager. Cassidy stated that Teacher Appreciation helps to support the local teachers and administration for their dedication to the children and community.

State Farm®, Members Credit Union, and Surfing HyperUSA™ are just a few of the local businesses providing information to attendants. Surfing HyperUSA will offer faculty and administration a promotion to waive the Internet access activation fee for residential service. Information will also be available explaining current services and rates for business consumers.

"We appreciate Hypernet's participation and believe that this is a mutually beneficial agreement in hopes of furthering local businesses in the Cleburne Community," Cassidy said.

Other companies expected to attend are Palm®, Nextel®, and Sprint®, which will hold informative presentations throughout the day. Teacher Appreciation Day is scheduled from 10a.m. to 4p.m. and several of the school districts expected to attend are Cleburne, Rio Vista, Alvarado, Grandview, Joshua, and Glen Rose.

Texans saved a combined $69.6 million in state and local taxes during the 1999 and 2000 tax holidays. There has been a recent proposal by state Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander (R), which would save taxpayers an additional $46 million from 2001 to 2003, at the cost of the Texas treasury. The proposal could extend the three-day sales tax holiday to five days and include safety equipment, school supplies, and materials needed to sew children's clothing.

Although this issue has been pushed hard by Rylander and filed as a bill by Senate Finance Chairman Rodney Ellis (D), no decision has been made to extend the weekend savings or include additional tax-exempt items to the current list for 2001.
